Programs:
The Programs of SGA are the spirit and most recognizable part of the organization.  At first glance they reach out to our campus and community by encouraging school spirit through sales of merchandise, such as t-shirts, created by Hokie Effect and Hokies on Fire.  They are also shaping future leaders on this campus in the Freshmen Leadership Experience, as well as, providing services to our students through Tenants Association of Blacksburg and SGA’s Big Clothing Sale.  Most importantly they provide opportunities to live out our motto Ut Prosim through community service with the Big Event, Relay for Life, and Community Initiatives.

FLEX:
FLEX, Freshmen Leadership Experience, is a program that is run by Virginia Tech's Student Government Association (SGA). FLEX's goal is to integrate freshmen into leadership organizations around campus. The FLEX program offers positions and experiences dealing with technology, legislation, fundraising and community service. The program presents its members with a chance to get involved in the many programs Virginia Tech provides, especially those programs SGA sponsors. FLEX is growing every year and was voted the most innovative new leadership program in the ACC!

TAB:
The Tenants Association of Blacksburg (TAB) seeks to help those looking to find residence in the Blacksburg community. Additionally, a goal is to assist Virginia Tech students in becoming smart and effective tenants. TAB provides a range of resources such as information on each apartment complex in town through a searchable database, a venue for tenants to file formal complaints, and an automated ratings system. With support from the town of Blacksburg, Virginia Tech's Student Government Association, and Student Legal Services, TAB offers student information sessions each semester on understanding the complexities of signing a lease. Table cards and other literature will be also be published throughout campus. Feel free to contact TAB at any time!

Fundraising:
As your new fundraising chairs, Steve Smith and Ashley Gray, we will be helping to raise money for the upcoming two years 2007 and 2008. The main event we focus on is the J. Crew sale, which occurs twice a year in the fall and spring. The J. Crew sale is a fundraising event that S.G.A. puts on in order to raise money. We chose J. Crew because it is very popular with the students and sells high quality products. Also, during exam time, we sell exam study baskets that the parents can purchase for their kids which include all kinds of motivating goodies. These are the two current events that fundraising has done over the past years. In the fall, we will be working to try out a new fundraising idea. At the moment, it is still in the idea stage, but we are hoping to have a new event in the spring to raise more money. Fundraising is the backbone of every organization, and we want to try and strengthen S.G.A. fundraising to the best of our abilities. Since both of us are newly appointed to this position, we are going to try and bring fresh new ideas to the table and come up with a new fundraising idea. More information to come in the fall!

Big Event: One Big Day, One Big Thanks! This is the seventh year the Virginia Tech Student Government Association has held The Big Event. The Big Event is a huge day of service in which Virginia Tech students participate in community service projects.  The Big Event is a way for students to show appreciation to ALL residents of Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Radford, Shawsville, Pembroke, and Pearisburg. Examples of previous jobs include painting fences, washing windows, general cleaning, and yard work.  Jobs take 3-4 hours to complete and cannot involve power, electric, or gasoline equipment.  If needed, materials and tools for the service project can be provided by The Big Event.

Hokie Effect:
The Hokie Effect program has become a tradition at Virginia Tech over the past 10 years. The Hokie Effect program is developed and organized entirely by students.  With its goal being to unify VT fans and encourage Hokie spirit, the program has been extremely successful and is rapidly growing in popularity. The Hokie Effect was created by the Student Government Association. In its first year, 5,000 Hokie Effect t-shirts were sold featuring the slogan "How 'bout them Hokies?"  Now, six years later, the program is anticipating sales of nearly 85,000 t-shirts! Almost 500 entries were submitted with ideas for this year's slogans.  The Maroon Effect will take place at the Homecoming Game against UNC on September 29, 2007. The slogan "More tradition then you since 1872" highlights the fantastic tradition and history of VPI.  The Orange Effect game will be against Florida State on November 3, 2007. The slogan "Blacksburg, VA Small Town, Big Sound" identifies the small community but big spirit that makes Virginia Tech unique. The Hokie Effect team is also excited about a big switch made this year: the maroon effect shirt is traditionally long sleeve but will be short sleeve this year. And the orange effect shirt, which is traditionally short sleeve, will be long sleeve. This will allow fans to add something new and different to their Hokie wardrobe.

Hokies on Fire:
The objective of this program is to dramatically increase the awareness that Virginia Tech is a high-powered basketball school.  The effort will be to get this message across to; the student body, the community, and of course the visiting basketball teams.  One step would be to get Virginia Tech basketball on the students' schedules and keep home games from becoming an after thought. The sale of T-shirts, campus posters with reminders about coming games, and Emails will increase the overall awareness of the student body.  The next step would be to ensure that when people show up for home games; they are amazed with the atmosphere of a Virginia Tech basketball game. It is known that the intensity of the student fans has literally changed the outcome of games. Cassell may be smaller than Lane but does not mean it should not be as loud. It is time to show Virginia Tech and the country that the students are behind their Basketball team. The final step would be the opposing teams dreading the trip to Virginia Tech, knowing that Cassell Coliseum is one of the toughest arenas in the ACC.
