Meet Tuna and Danny

For the 2015-2016 school year, the Student Government Association is happy to welcome Tuna Shankar and Danny Strock as the Student Government President and Vice-President. We sat down with Tuna and Danny to see how they started in SGA, and some of the things they’re hoping to do for next year:

What inspired you to get involved in SGA?

I was inspired to get involved with SGA after I was a part of the Freshman Leadership Experience (FLEX) my first year at Tech. I was interested in serving students and creating an activist mentality on campus, I realized that I am passionate about SGA and have served ever since then.

What is your favorite memory/experience at Virginia Tech so far?

My favorite memory at Virginia Tech so far has been the InclusiveVT “Let’s Talk” Event where there was a discussion on campus about diversity and inclusion and students were encouraged to share their experiences centered around inclusion on campus.

What is one goal you have for next year to increase the overall student experience?

One goal that I have to increase the overall student experience is to continue my work and SGA’s work with equity and inclusion on campus. I think that our campus is growing in diversity and in coordination with that we need to find new and innovative ways to discuss inclusivity on our campus.

How can students get involved next year both inside and outside SGA?

Students can get involved with SGA through the Freshman Leadership Experience (FLEX), Committees, or our Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branches. Attending Gobblerfest in the fall can introduce you to SGA initiatives and projects that you may be interested in. Additionally, our Executive and Legislative meetings are open to all students and they occur weekly. Feel free to stop by!

What is one thing you’re most looking forward to next year?

I look most forward to continuing to work with motivated student leaders and working on SGA projects such as Financial Wellness and inclusivity on campus.

MEET DANNY, YOUR 2015-2016 VICE-PRESIDENT

What inspired you to get involved in SGA?

I actually originally got involved with SGA when a good friend of mine, Dustin Dorph, former SGA President, reached out to me about getting involved as a Senator. He had expressed that he thought I would have been a great fit for the position and I’ve enjoyed SGA ever since!

What is your favorite memory/experience at Virginia Tech so far?

My favorite memory at Virginia Tech so far has been being involved with Hokie Camp over this past summer. It was great to be involved with incoming Hokies and watching them become more involved in Virginia Tech.

What is one goal you have for next year to increase the overall student experience?

I want to open up SGA more to student opinion, whether through increased student forums or a more receptive office space. By gaining more input from students, I think we can better implement programs to serve the student body’s needs.

How can students get involved next year both inside and outside SGA?

Exec committees are definitely a great way to get involved, especially for first-year students! And like I said before, even if you’re not involved directly with SGA, your input can help generate new ideas within SGA.

What is one thing you’re most looking forward to next year?

I’m really just looking forward to getting our new Exec team and seeing what new ideas they have for our organization next year!
