About SGA
Student Government Association (SGA) exists to be the official voice of the student body at Virginia Tech. All undergraduate students are members of the SGA. However, many students do serve to amplify your voice to the administration of the University, to the Board of Visitors, to the Town of Blacksburg, to the Virginia Legislature and to the US Congress.
The student body elects the President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary each Spring. The SGA consists of an appointed executive board, popularly elected Senate, House of Representatives, and Judicial branch. The 35 Senators are elected by their peers from respective colleges. The 719 Representatives from the House are selected by their respective organizations. The Judicial Branch consists of nine associate Justices, all being led by the Chief Justice. The Student Body President also appoints over 27 students to campus-wide commissions and committees to make sure the student voice is heard in our University governance process.
The Student Government Association is responsible for programs, legislation, and representation that affect your life. Relay for Life, with over $500,000 raised for the American Cancer Society, and the Big Event, with thousands of student volunteers performing hundreds of service projects, are the most recognized of the SGA programs. Past examples of legislation that provided real change include the creation of the Blacksburg Transit, the Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment (from Environmental Coalition representative Elena Dulys-Nesbaum), more lighting across campus, and much more. Students are more than representing in commissions and committees, some students are leading projects to reform the Curriculum of Liberal Education, 24/7 study access for students, inventing an official student section at basketball games, and much more. We hope to empower and inspire each one of you to be the change at Virginia Tech. Find your voice in 321 Squires, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
